2017, Seminars in Diagnostic PathologyCitation Excerpt :This is especially true in limited samples of image-guided core biopsies,8 but pathologists may suggest hamartoma as a diagnosis if the radiologic findings are concordant.9 Cytogenetic analysis of two cases of breast hamartomas demonstrated clonal rearrangements involving chromosome 12q12-15, a cluster region of chromosome breakpoints previously identified in lipomas, uterine leiomyomas, and pleomorphic adenomas of the salivary gland.10,11 Recurrent somatic mutations in exon 2 of MED12 have been reported in the stromal compartment of fibroadenomas12; these mutations are also found in phyllodes tumors13–16 and uterine leiomyomas.17

Although these terms imply that both glandular and adipose elements are neoplastic, this is not necessarily the case with lipoadenomas and adenolipomas found at various anatomical sites [25].

In mammary adenolipomas, for example, the glandular elements are karyotypically normal and do not appear to be neoplastic.12 Using the terms adenolipoma and lipoadenoma for lesions in which the epithelial component is nonneoplastic can be misleading and therefore can result in confusion.
