      The most important elements that positively regulate the G1 phase are cell cycle proteins (cyclins D1 and E). Cell cycle proteins and cell cycle protein kinases (CDK2, CDK4, and CDK6) are assembled into two types of complexes: cyclin D1/CDK4/CDK6 and cyclin E/CDK2 [34,35]. Studies have shown that CDK is abnormally activated in many tumor tissues and could induce excessive cell proliferation.

      The gene coding for CARP (cardiac ankyrin repeat protein), known to inhibit DNA synthesis possibly through induction of p21 and subsequent dephosphorylation of Rb (Kanai et al., 2001), was up-regulated [#38/2.6x] (Table 1). Consistent with this, p21 encoding a cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitor (Hunter, 1993) was up-regulated [#44/2.5x]. Down-regulation of wip1 was also observed [2-#12/0.38x] (Table 2): its product represses p53 activity through dephosphorylation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (Takekawa et al., 2000).
